Best Strains for Sleep
Relaxation-forward picks from the community strain library, ranked by terpene profile.
Not every indica knocks you out, and plenty of hybrids are sleepier than their labels suggest. What actually predicts an evening-friendly strain is its terpene profile: myrcene and linalool-heavy strains are the ones people most often describe as sedating, regardless of what the packaging says.
The ranking below scores every strain in our community library against a relaxation-first mood profile built from its documented terpenes. It updates as new strains and lab data are added, so it reflects what is actually in the library — not a static top-ten list written once and forgotten.
How this ranking works
Every strain in the community library with a documented terpene profile is scored against a for sleep-focused mood profile using the same terpene-to-effect model behind our terpene matcher. The list refreshes automatically as strains and lab data are added. Effects are community-reported and terpene-inferred — individual responses vary, and none of this is medical advice.

The terpenes doing the work
Myrcene
The most common cannabis terpene, also found in hops and mango. Earthy and musky; strains rich in myrcene are the ones most often described as couch-friendly and sedating.
Linalool
The lavender terpene. Floral and slightly spicy, and the same compound that makes lavender a bedtime staple — strains carrying it lean calm and quiet.
Caryophyllene
Peppery and warm. Frequently shows up alongside myrcene in strains people reach for at night, and adds a body-heavy undertone to the effect.
FAQ
What terpenes are associated with sleepiness?
Myrcene and linalool are the two most commonly linked to sedating, relaxing effects, with caryophyllene often appearing alongside them. Strains where those three dominate the profile are the ones users most often describe as nighttime strains.
Are indica strains always better for sleep?
Not reliably. The indica/sativa label describes plant lineage more than effect, and lab data shows heavy overlap between the two. A myrcene-dominant sativa-leaning hybrid can be sleepier than a terpinolene-heavy indica, which is why this list ranks by terpene profile instead of type.
Do edibles work differently for sleep than smoking?
Edibles take 45 minutes to 2 hours to kick in but last far longer — commonly 6 to 8 hours — which is why many people prefer them for staying asleep rather than just falling asleep. Timing the dose an hour or two before bed is the commonly reported approach.
What dose do people commonly use at night?
Most people start low: 2.5 to 5mg THC is a common evening starting point, moving up only after seeing how a full night responds. More is not better for sleep — higher doses are commonly reported to cause grogginess the next morning.
Does THC affect sleep quality?
Many people report falling asleep faster with THC, while regular heavy use is commonly reported to suppress dream recall and can affect sleep quality over time. As with everything here, this is community-reported experience, not medical advice — talk to a clinician about persistent sleep problems.
