CBD Edible Dosing Guide: How Many mg, When, and Why

THC edibles come with dire warnings and decimal-point dosing. CBD edibles are a different animal: non-intoxicating, forgiving, and with a comfortable range so wide that two people can take a 5× different dose and both be happy. But "forgiving" isn't the same as "anything goes" — dose still determines whether you feel calm, sleepy, or nothing at all, and homemade CBD edibles only work if you actually know what's in them.

This guide covers how much CBD to put in a serving, how edible CBD behaves differently from oils and vapes, and how to hit your numbers when you're making gummies or baked goods at home.

CBD Dosing by Goal

There's no single correct dose — bodyweight, metabolism, and what you're after all matter. These ranges are the widely used starting points:

Goal Per-serving range Notes
General wellness / first-timers 5–10mg Start here if you're new; effects are subtle by design
Everyday calm, focus 10–15mg The most common daily-use range
Stress and sleep support 15–25mg Take sleep-oriented doses 1–2 hours before bed
Experienced users, targeted relief 25–50mg Work up to this over a week-plus, not on day one
Heavy servings 50mg+ Drowsiness becomes likely; check the medication note below

Two rules make all of these work better. Start low and hold steady: take the same dose for 3–4 days before judging it, because CBD's effects build with consistency more than with quantity. And titrate up in 5mg steps rather than doubling — the goal is the minimum dose that does the job.

Edible CBD Is Not Tincture CBD

If you're used to CBD oil under the tongue, edibles will surprise you in two ways:

  • Slower onset. Sublingual oil works in 15–30 minutes; edibles route through digestion and the liver, so onset runs 45 minutes to 2 hours. Don't re-dose because "nothing happened" at the one-hour mark.
  • Longer duration. Edible CBD lasts 6–8 hours versus 2–4 for sublingual — which is exactly why edibles are popular for sleep: a 20mg gummy an hour before bed covers most of the night.

Bioavailability is also lower for edibles (roughly 10–20% of the labeled dose reaches circulation), which is part of why edible doses run higher than tincture doses. Taking your CBD edible with or after a meal containing fat meaningfully improves absorption — cannabinoids hitch a ride on dietary fat.

Making CBD Edibles That Actually Contain What You Think

Homemade CBD edibles fail in one of two ways: the flower never got activated, or nobody did the math. Both are fixable.

Activate first (yes, CBD needs decarb too)

Raw hemp flower contains CBDA, not CBD. Like THCA, it converts with heat — but CBDA needs a little longer: 240°F for 60–90 minutes in the oven, versus 40 minutes for THC-dominant flower. Skipping or rushing decarb is the number one reason homemade CBD edibles "don't work." Full method details are in our decarboxylation guide. If you're starting from CBD isolate or distillate instead of flower, it's already activated — no decarb, just dissolve it into warm oil.

Then do the math

The potency formula is the same one THC edibles use:

(grams of flower × CBD% ÷ 100 × 1000 × decarb efficiency) ÷ servings = mg CBD per serving

Example: 7g of 15% CBD hemp flower, oven-decarbed (90% efficiency), split across 30 gummies = 945mg ÷ 30 = 31.5mg per gummy. Want 15mg gummies? Make 60 of them, or start with 3.5g of flower. Our free CBD edible calculator runs these numbers for any combination of flower, potency, decarb method, and batch size — including CBD-only recipes with 0% THC.

Mixing CBD with THC

CBD moderates THC's sharper edges, which is why balanced edibles are so popular:

  • 1:1 (CBD:THC) — the classic "social" ratio; noticeably softer than THC alone
  • 2:1 to 5:1 — CBD-dominant; mild, functional, minimal anxiety
  • CBD-only — non-intoxicating, no impairment

If you're blending, dose against the THC number first (it's the one with consequences), then check the CBD side. The CBD edible calculator reports both cannabinoids and the ratio per serving when you enter both percentages.

Safety Notes Worth Taking Seriously

CBD is well tolerated, but three things deserve respect. Medication interactions: CBD inhibits some liver enzymes (the same reason grapefruit carries warnings) and can affect blood thinners, some antidepressants, and seizure medications — if you take prescription medication, ask a pharmacist before regular high-dose CBD. Drowsiness: doses above ~50mg make many people sleepy; don't schedule your first big dose before a drive. Drug testing: full-spectrum hemp products contain trace THC (legally up to 0.3%), which can accumulate to a positive test with heavy daily use; broad-spectrum or isolate-based edibles avoid this.

Label and Store Like It Matters

Write the mg-per-piece on the container the day you make the batch. CBD degrades with light, heat, and time just like THC — gummies keep 2–4 weeks refrigerated, and infused oils hold potency for months in a dark cupboard. The full rules are in our edibles storage guide, and if you're making gummies, the lecithin guide covers keeping the infusion evenly blended so piece #1 and piece #30 carry the same dose.

FAQ

How many mg of CBD should I eat in an edible?

Start at 5–10mg if you're new, 15–25mg for stress or sleep support. Hold the same dose for several days before adjusting, and step up in 5mg increments. CBD is non-intoxicating, so the cost of starting low is only patience.

How long does a CBD edible take to work?

45 minutes to 2 hours, depending on your metabolism and whether you ate. Effects then last 6–8 hours — considerably longer than sublingual oil. Don't take a second dose inside the first two hours.

Can you take too much CBD?

Serious harm is unlikely, but high doses commonly cause drowsiness and can upset the stomach, and CBD interacts with some medications (blood thinners in particular). More isn't better past the minimum effective dose — it's just more expensive.

Do CBD edibles work without THC?

Yes. CBD-only edibles made from hemp flower or isolate are non-intoxicating and won't get you high, but the relaxation and sleep-support effects are real. Some evidence suggests small amounts of THC enhance CBD's effects (the entourage effect), which is why 5:1 ratios are popular.

Why don't I feel my CBD edibles?

Usual causes: the flower was never decarbed (CBDA needs 240°F for 60–90 minutes), the dose is below your threshold, or you're judging after one day. Verify the math with a calculator, confirm your decarb, then hold a consistent dose for 3–4 days before deciding.
